Langhorne Players Opens 78th Season with Zoe Kazan's After the Blast: Hope Springs Eternal in a World Gone Wrong.
Plot: In a not-too-distant future, humanity's best and brightest have gone underground after radiation has devastated the world. Generations later, coping with life inside an artificial habitat, they're relying on implanted chips that simulate everything from adventures in nature to the flavors of their daily meals. After government rejections, Anna and Oliver struggle to have a child of their own, until Oliver brings home a robot companion named Arthur for Anna to train as an assistant to the blind. Will Anna's connection to this machine help her to be the mother she has always dreamed she'd become? "[Kazan has] created a slyly detailed alternate universe that is both an extrapolation of the world we know today and its own consistent entity." -The New York Times.
From the Director: "In a world decimated by nuclear fallout, we witness a most human story of hope and survival buried deep underground. A third generation living beneath the surface finds its way in the aftermath of their forefathers' doom. A heartfelt, yet telling mirror held to the face of today's society. Each of us live in private little silos of our own making; isolated by choices and circumstances beyond our control. How can one balance life and love while steeped within surroundings so separate from reality and nature? Only time will tell. Having the original robot, Arthur, from the Broadway production on stage has been nothing short of a miracle. On loan from New York's Lincoln Center Theater, the iconic helper bot's story is a marvel in itself. Whiz kids from Princeton High School's robotics team helped restore Artie to stage-ready condition for our run. The audience is in for a real treat!"
